Ulcerative ColitisUlcerative Colitis is a serious and chronic disease that is classified as an Inflammatory Bowel Disease . IBD is the general name given for diseases that cause inflamation in the small and large intestines. In the case of ulcerative colitis, ulcers develop in the lining of the colon. It is often difficult to diagnose due to it's simularity to another IBD by the name of Crohn's Disease. Only in the case of Crohns disease, the inflamation is deeper and can appear in other parts of the digestive tract including the small intestine, esophogus, stomach and the mouth as well as the colon. The cause of ulcerative colitis is still unknown however, it is known that people who have the disease have abnormalities in the immune system weather these abnormalities are the cause or a result is still unknown. Even though certain foods and stress are not a cause within itself of ulcerative Colitis, they are often triggers of symptoms to certain individuals, often making the symptoms worse. Common symptoms of ulcerative colitis include abdominal cramps, and diarrhea with blood in it. Other symptoms include weight loss and loss of appetite, fatigue, loss of body fluids and nutrients and rectal bleeding as well as joint pain, delayed growth (in children), anemia and skin lesions. While most of the patients are diagnosed as only having mild symptoms, others are diagnosed with more severe symptoms such as nausea, severe appetite and weight loss, profuse bloody diarrhea and rectal bleeding, as well as severe abdominal cramps.
